Recently we have purchased a rather unusual vehicle, a bright red 3 wheeled van, somewhere between a car and a scooter, about 2 meters in length and possibly the cutest and oddest vehicle you will ever see. It boasts an impressive top speed of 25mph (assuming no headwind!) from it’s tiny 50cc engine, and a full tank of petrol comes to about a tenner.
The plan is to fit it with an espresso machine and it’s own water and energy supply, and to use it as a mobile coffee stand. In the meantime it will be used to advertise Kuvuka cafe, so look out for it as it cruises the streets of Bristol, possibly frustrating other traffic but delighting on lookers!
We need a name for it, so if you have any suggestions, please email me.
Pictures to come!

Kuvuka will be 3 at the end of December, and to celebrate we have decided to raise a target of £2,500 for cancer treatment in Uganda, through the charity Suubi Trust. We’re asking customers to please give just a couple of quid (or whatever they feel they can give) to get us to that target. To help we are going to match your donation, so a gift of £5 will mean £10 worth of cancer care will go to someone that otherwise would not get the treatment they need, and would be without hope. So please visit our justgiving page www.justgiving.com/kuvuka-cafe and give a quid or two. Thanks.

Kuvuka Cafe has always supported charity work, and have always looked to give to charitable projects where the most amount of good is done with the modest amount we can give.
Suubi Trust (registered charity, 1119874) is a small but mighty charity that is run entirely by volunteers who claim nothing from the money they raise, no salaries, no expenses, nothing. They also are in a unique position to make use of existing infrastructure in Uganda due to their partnership with IHK, a private hospital there, so as the money they raise goes a really long way.
For example, what can you get with £8.50? it might get you a very small round of drinks, or a couple of cinema ticket, or a rather forgettable meal, but £8.50 will pay the average cost of treatment at one of the clinics Suubi Trust finances. That’s £8.50 which could save a life! It would be hard to find a better way to spend that money!
I do urge you to check them out, and use their giving page to donate a relatively small amount of money to change a life. Visit www.suubitrust.org.uk

As we leave our rather disappointing summer behind we get to look forwards to warming ourselves with hot chocolate, getting snug indoors, and of course then there’s Christmas to look forwards to! Kuvuka is planning some events in this coming period, which should be great. They’re all intended to raise money for the charity Suubi Trust (www.suubitrust.org.uk) so make sure you support them.
12th November: Handbags Wine and puddings night! This is to promote stylish, limited edition bags from fairtrade sources, and supporting the needy in India. If this appeals get in touch to reserve a place. Book early, it sounds like it could be popular!
Some time later in November: Kuvuka Klub night – Some of us got rather peed-off with the fact that it is impossible to go out for a dance without having to fight off leery men, or be irritated by drunk ijits. So we decided to have our own night at Kuvuka where we can hear some funk and just get down! Details are still to be finalised, we’ll probably have some live music for chilling and milling around to upstairs, and a DJ and dancefloor downstairs. Tickets will be sold to raise money for suubi trust, a very worthy charity that you must check out. Space is limited, it will be a fairly exclusive affair, so watch this space, and book early.
Mid December:Open Mic Christmas Readings night – Tickets will be £6, all of which goes towards the charity Suubi Trust, and for that you will get mulled wine and mince pies, a good dose of Christmas spirit, lots of live performances and Christmas readings, the opportunity to give your own Christmas reading or performance, and a wee Christmas pressie as you leave! It will be the antidote to Christmas consumerism, and you’ll love it, so keep an eye out for tickets and book early.

We have a small range of crafts for sale that would make excellent Christmas pressents on sale in the cafe, and the best thing is that they rase money for charity! The crafts are produced by patients and their relatives in Kiwoko hospital in Uganda, and the income generated helps support that charity hospital.

The Master Kora player Moussa Kouyate has played several times, which has been a real treat. In addition to this we’ve had great music from Jack, and from Sarah (which I unfortunately missed, but am told was really brilliant, so please come back!)
Given the talent that is evidently available to us I’d like to make the most of this, and will try to bring you some live music each Saturday afternoon. This saturday Jack Cleverly will be playing from 12, he’s very good! Come along!
